On its more serious side, the University of London’s central bodies and departments are there with Great Ormond Street Hospital and other medical centres nearby. The British Museum is at its heart and is a “must see” for any visitor. There you can see many wonders from throughout the world gathered in one place. See the Elgin Marbles while you can.

It is a beautiful area with elegant houses from the 17th an 18th century and green squares. It gained fame through its literary connections and the Bloomsbury Group of artists headed by Virginia Woolf. Other artists who have made their homes there, past and present, include J.M. Barry (author of Peter Pan), Charles Darwin, Charles Dickins (the Dickins Museum is nearby), Ricky Gervais, Dorothy L Sayers, and William Blake Yeats.

There are excellent transport links for the rest of London with easy access to the Underground system at Russell Square and Holborn. The railway stations of Euston, Kings Cross and St Pancreas, where Eurostar links to Europe, are just north of Bloomsbury.
